“HE THAT PLANTS TREES LOVES OTHERS BESIDE HIMSELF – THOMAS FULLER”
WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY was established by the UN general assembly in 1972 on the 1st day of the stockholm conference on the human environment, resulting from discussions on the integration of human interactions and the environment. Two years later, in 1974 this WED was held with a theme of “ONLY ONE EARTH”.
In 2020, WED theme is “BIODIVERSITY”
BIODIVERSITY – The variability among living organisms from all sources, including terrestrial, marine, and other aquatic ecosystems and the ecological complexes of which they are part; this includes diversity within species, between species and of ecosystems.
Due to human interruption with nature, disturbances in biodiversities can be easily seen in effects of bushfire, deforestation, plastic pollution, acidification, air pollution, landfills with methane gases and the list is endless. Now global pandemic clearly demonstrates the interdependence of humans and the webs of life in which they exist.
