ART DECO movement was arts and architecture movement that originated in the 1920s and developed into a major style in western Europe and the United States during the 1930s. The style was first exhibited in Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes, held in Paris in 1925 . Art Deco design represented modernism which turned into fashion, influencing not only buildings or interior like furniture and accessories, but also jewelry, fashion, cars, movie theatres, trains, and everyday objects.

The characteristic features of Art Deco are symmetry, clean straight lines, planarity, and repetition of elements. Art Deco objects often showcase with a “streamlined” look; ornament that is geometric or stylized from representational forms such as floral, animals, and sunrays. The Art Deco aesthetic emphasized machine-age streamlining and sleek geometry.
Through the 1930s, Art Deco was used on structures that became landmarks. In New York alone, famous skyscrapers like the Empire State Building (1931) designed by Shreve, Lamb and Harmon , the Chrysler Building (1930) designed by William Van Allen and Rockefeller Center (1935) designed by Raymond Hood, are all examples of Art Deco architecture.
Like Art Deco, Art Nouveau is an ornamental style applied to such media as architecture, interior design, jewelry, and illustration. Both styles were popular in Europe and the United States, but Art Nouveau flourished earlier, between 1890 and 1910; Art Deco reached its height in the late 1920s and early ’30s.
Art Nouveau emphasized nature, and objects were characterized especially by asymmetrical sinuous lines, often taking the form of flower stalks and buds, vine tendrils, insect wings, and other delicate natural objects. Art Deco, on the other hand, celebrated the modern machine and promoted geometric lines and sleek forms.
Art Deco’s main visual characteristics derive from repetitive use of linear and geometric shapes including triangular, zigzagged, trapezoidal, and chevron-patterned forms. The nature and extent of the stylization and simplification varies depending upon the regional iteration of the style.
